All drains start to clog or get blocked from time to time even if you do your best to keep them clean.
If you notice your water draining slower than usual, it’s time to clean your drain before you get a total blockage.
To avoid plumbing nightmares, be in the know of effective drain cleaning solutions that you can do yourself!
Every few weeks, pour a drain cleaner down your drains. Whether this be a chemical option available to purchase from the supermarket, or an organic solution of ½ cup vinegar and ½ cup bi-carb.
Pour the solution down and let sit for a few minutes before rinsing with hot water from the tap. This should be enough to remove any build up of soap, grease and hair that is getting clogged in your pipes.
If you have accidently put something down the toilet or drain that you shouldn’t (such as baby wipes or sanitary items) and think it may be causing the water to drain slow, use the plunger to try and dislodge the object. These can be effective for unblocking toilets and sinks by disturbing the blockage.
If you have any solid blockages, an augur (commonly referred to as a toilet snake) can be particularly effective at dislodging it. It won’t however remove the build up on drain walls so it’s important to also clean regularly as suggested.
Any or all of the above methods should successfully clean your drain and fix minor
