It’s an all too common problem, the dreaded smelly drain in the bathroom. It can be described as a stale ‘poo’ smell. You’d be forgiven for thinking one of the kids forgot to flush the loo. The thought of taking the grate of the drain in your bathroom floor to see what is down there is almost too much to bare for most, which is why a lot of people choose to call in a Plumber. Are your drains causing a stink? If you are game, there are a few things you can try at home to eliminate the stench before resorting to calling in a Plumber. If the bathroom hasn’t been used for a while, e.g. you’ve moved into a house that sat vacant for a few weeks, the water trap may have dried up. This could be causing unpleasant gases from the sewer to seep up through the drain causing a gassy smell in your bathroom. Use a torch and shine it down the drain, if you cannot see any water, this is your problem. You will need to create a water seal in the drain. To do this, run the shower, bath or basin that is attached to the drain and the floor waste will fill with water to create a seal. Air out your bathroom, and the problem should be fixed. If you can see water down the drain, it is likely that there is hair, toothpaste and other soap or fatty residues trapped in your drain decomposing, bacteria forms causing a nasty ‘rotten egg’ smell. In this case, there are a few things you can try. Pour a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed slowly by a cup of white vinegar. Let the solution sit for 10 minutes before pouring a bucket of hot water down the drain. If this method fails to fix the stink, you could try over the counter drain clearing products such as Draino, available from most supermarkets and hardware stores. If all else fails, then it is time to call in a Plumber who will give the drains a proper clean out to rid the drains of bacteria & build-up, eliminating the odour once and for all.
